You have probably heard that the Taliban took over Afghanistan in a matter of a few days. Afghanistan has been in turmoil for decades. It has seen wars, clashes of ideologies and instability.

The US has been in Afghanistan for years and President Biden decided to remove all troops from Afghanistan and that gave an opportunity for the Taliban to start an offensive to retake the country. The country had not even recovered from the 2001 invasion, and this further imposition demolished the country in a matter of days and following this, the Capital city fell on 15th of August. Why did Afghanistan fall so fast?

When the US controlled Afghanistan they decided to train local military groups to fight against the Taliban. However, the USA routinely cut training and funding for these security forces and that made their training efficient and the army remain unequipped.

The US decided to have a dialogue with the Taliban against the Afghan Government's wishes. The dialogue between the USA and the Taliban took place on 'Doha Talks'. The talks were about the Taliban to secure American interests (Afghanistan resources) before the US withdrew. The American government usually says we don’t negotiate with terrorists but this time they did not heed to their own words.

The third reason why Afghanistan fell was because the US left too early. The US left the country unstable and in the middle of attacks by the Taliban.

The last time the Taliban was in control over the country they forced all women to have burka on. They did not let them get an education or allowed them to work. Women were sold as property and many women were raped and killed by the Taliban. Young girls also faced this kind of oppression. As young as 4-year-olds have been sold to Talibs as brides. Ethnic minorities and religious minorities groups also face oppression. Groups like Hazaras have been attacked and killed many times by the Taliban.

The Taliban promised that they would let women get an education and let them work but many feel that is just something they say to people to make them stop talking about Afghanistan. In fact, many videos have come up on social media showing Taliban attacking civilians and women in particular. In other videos it showed Talibs telling women to go home and not leave their homes.

What did President Biden say about the situation in Afghanistan?

Biden said that he feels zero responsibility over the human right abuses and crimes against women in Afghanistan. He even said, "do you expect us to go to China because of what they are doing to the Uyghurs?"He has acknowledged that a genocide is happening in China and oppression, but he does not want to do anything about it. The former president George W Bush thinks it is a bad idea to do nothing.

Many Afghans see no future in the country, and many are trying to flee the country. Videos have come to the internet showing hundreds of Afghans standing on the airport demanding to let them in on the flights abroad. Some even climbed on the planes when boarding and many fell to their deaths because of that. Some even gave their small children to people leaving Afghanistan so their children can have a life without oppression.
