Aftermath of Explosions in Beirut, Lebanon

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

In this article, Jardar Ali explains the events after the explosion as well as the government and Covid-19's role in the rebuilding of this city.

Lebanon is a country with many sects and religious groups, but also with a

troublesome history. These groups have fought a bloody civil war in 30 years

that ended in 1990. Lebanon is corrupted and has a weak currency. Most of

the representatives in the government are mismanaging their positions. In 2019 Lebanon's currency fell and that left many broke.  In August, Explosion at the port of Beirut shook the world. A stockpile of ammonium nitrate was the cause of the explosion. That same stockpile made thousands wounded and damaged over 7000 homes.

Every sect started to help each other in every way possible. Reports showed

that the ammonium nitrate had been stored at the port for 7 years. People’s

mistrust for the government grew and the Lebanese people decided to rebuild

Beirut themself. Lebanon cabinet resigned from their position and many of

them are trying to leave the country with all of their riches. That money could

help the rebuilding process.  After the blast, many Beirutis had a tough time economically

and many children could not continue their education.

There are more Covid-19 cases in Lebanon after the blast and it's hard to

find hand sanitizers and masks. Beirutis and rest of Lebanon have seen transect nationalism and everyone is helping everyone irrespective of their religious/ethnic backgrounds. Many families are letting families of neighborhoods that were damaged, live in their houses rent free. Beirut and Lebanon have a hard time in front of them but the collaboration they are doing together is a step of rebuilding Lebanon.
