Major League Baseball has made history by appointing the first female general manager. In early November, the Miami Marlins named Kim Ng as their next team general manager. Sports management has always generally been a male dominated industry, so Kim is making big strides for women in sports.

Kim had already been shaking up the baseball scene in her 30 years in the industry through her work experience. She began her career in baseball as an intern for the Chicago White Sox. She also worked in the American League office. Shortly after, Kim became the youngest assistant general manager for the New York Yankees when she was 29. As she moved up the ranks with the Yankees, participating in three World Series Championships, Kim subsequently joined the Los Angeles Dodgers as vice president and assistant general

manager. Most recently, Kim spent the last decade as the senior vice president of baseball

operations for Major League Baseball.

However, Kim’s identity as a person of color has led to racist attacks, which may not come as a surprise given the West’s inherently discriminatory nature. Not only is she the first female general manager, but Kim is also the first East Asian-American general manager. Recently, a video of a racist attack against her resurfaced on the internet from 2003. During her time working as an assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bill Singer – a pitcher was an executive with the New York Mets – approached Kim and taunted her about her heritage. He mocked her Chinese heritage and used a fake accent to do so. Even though he apologized and was forced to resign, he acquired other jobs in the industry. She has spoken openly about her struggles and others have even noted that based on her resume and experience, she should have been promoted much earlier in her career. As a woman of color, Kim has had to struggle even more to get to where she is today.

Kim’s experience in leadership positions make her an ideal candidate for the role of general manager for the Miami Marlins, who she has not worked with yet. Kim’s status as the first female general manager has been lauded by other leaders in the baseball industry. She will go on to inspire other girls and women who are passionate about contributing to the management and operation of professional sports. She has stated that she is incredibly

excited to start in her new position and expects to lead the Miami Marlins to success in the

2021 season.
