“You see these last 3-4 days how many of our innocent and young lives have been taken away," says Kyaw Moe Tun. His statement was a response to the overwhelming amount of protests and deaths at the hands of the military in Myanmar. Since the coup on February 1st, over 1,800 individuals have been arrested, charged, or sentenced according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. These protests garnered a response from the UN, which stated "the strongest international actions" against the military as well as the condemendment of their actions which has seemingly been ignored thus far.

19-year old Kyal Sin is one of these young and innocent lives that have been taken away. On March 3rd, Kyal and many other Gen Z’ers marched for their beliefs of their future being free from the control of a military regime. Kyal led the large group of people and advised them how to stay safe during the clashes between protestors and the military. During the protests, Kyal led the group and chanted “Are we United” to which they replied ‘United”. After the news of her death by a bullet, comments and tributes came pouring onto social media and outrage over the cause of her death.

After the overthrow of the government by the military in Myanmar, peaceful protests took place as a way for people to express their discontent with the status of their nation. Once the military had word on these peaceful protests, they began a violent crackdown which resulted in the deaths of young people like Kyal Sin who gave up their lives fighting for what’s right.
