Nagorno Karabakh Conflict

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

In this article, Jardar Alai explains the ongoing Nagorno Karabakh Conflict as well as background information for a better understanding of how serious this issue is.

On September 27th,2020, Azerbaijani troops attacked the autonomous region of Nagorno Karabakh. The international community has condemned the war and the UN has made a clear statement that this issue should be solved through diplomacy. Azerbaijan's Ally Turkey has stated that they will assist Azerbaijan, so much so an Armenian source revealed Turkish fighter jets have shut down Armenian planes. Israel has as well sent arms to Azerbaijan. Russian foreign fighters are dashing into Nagorno Karabakh to assist Armenians in fighting the war. Azerbaijan is attempting to liberate cities that are controlled and occupied by the Armenians which has ultimately led to a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. To completely understand this conflict, it is necessary to comprehend the history of the Southern Caucasus from the early 20th century. Southern Caucasus was under the control of the Russian empire. The inhabitants of this area were the Muslim Azerbaijanis and the Christan Armenians, they lived together in peace and harmony. When Russia had its revolution many of the non-Russian regions declared independence from Russia as well the southern Caucasus too. In the Southern Caucasus, Two countries were formed, one being Azerbaijan in the east and one being Armenia to the west.

Both countries had a rise in Nationalism and both countries claimed the same land. That is because of many Armenians and Azerbaijanis lived on the same land under the Russians. Armenia wanted to add the territories of Nakhichevan, Zangezur, and Karabakh. Armenia declared war on Azerbaijan. This is the first war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Both nations attacked civilians and both nations made crimes against civilians. Many civilians fled the disputed regions to their ethnicity's new countries, but many Armenians decided to stay in Karabakh. When Russia became a communist state, they wanted to regain lost regions that received independence. The Soviet Union (Russia) declared war on Azerbaijan and Armenia. Both nations were once again subjected to Russian rule. Josef Stalin had wanted to end this conflict by giving the region of Zangezur to Armenia, while the rest stayed under Azerbaijani rule. This conflict was not an issue between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Soviet era.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia and Azerbaijan finally became independent. Azerbaijan had once again attacked Armenians in Karabakh, continuing the conflict and war which left many civilians dead. As a result, Armenians in Karabakh were allowed an autonomous region inside the republic of Azerbaijan. In order to protect Nagorno Karabakh, The Armenian military was stationed at the location. Both Nations governments used the casualties as propaganda for allowing the government to stay in power. Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has made a clear statement that he wants to retake Nagorno Karabakh back from Armenian control.

The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is a conflict between ethnicities and land ownership. This conflict has escalated many times, with this being the third time it has occurred. We are prospective, this issue will end with less human life killed.
