Recently in Canada, unmarked graves of dead indigenous children were found in former residential schools all over the country. Indigenous people all around the world are not new to discrimination and ethnic cleansing. This practice has had a long history. In Canada, the idea of taking indigenous children away from their families and putting them in unfavorable residential schools was a common practice until its demise in the 90s. The job of the school was to destroy the indigenous' culture, language and identity with force. The catholic church operated these residential schools. These schools destroyed many lives and the effects of it we can still see today. In the last months unmarked graves have been found on many different schools. One school in Kamloops Saskatchewan had 751 unmarked graves, and another in British Columbia had 215 unmarked graves. The children were buried without any name so it's hard to find their living family. The indigenous communities are dismal because they could be from any family. On 1st July, Canadians celebrate their national day but because of the recent events in the former residential schools many people went to the streets on that day. They demanded Canada day to be cancelled. They trended #cancelcanadaday. Protesters and the indigenous communities feel that Canada day is not a day to celebrate because of the long persecution committed by the Canadian government. Some protesters have torn statues of Canadian leaders that contributed to persecution of the indigenous groups. Critics are not fan of tearing statues, but many feel it's justified. Sources
